Character Dining at Disneyworld’s Chef Mickey’s – Is it Worth the Hype?
There is just something so magical about character dining. I mean, having Mickey as your dinner date just brings the magic to your fork and spoon. Well, not literally, but it just gives a restaurant meal that little something special to write home about. And, this my friends, you can experience at Chef Mickey’s.
So tell us a bit more about The Restaurant
Chef Mickey’s brings to guests a delightful smorgasbord of flavours. A buffet of meats, veggies, cold salads, soups, breads, Mickey-shaped waffles, and delightful assortment of sweets. Located at the Contemporary Resort just outside the Magic Kingdom, a meal here brings good food with the delightful joy of character visits. Depending on the meal you select (Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner) prices vary, but you are looking at a minimum $40 USD per person. As one of the most popular restaurants in the entire complex, do yourself and favour and make a reservation well in advance! To do this, go to the My Disney Experience section online and sign in. All your trip details will be right in front of you.
Before you enter the dining room, get your photo taken with the beautifully ornate Mickey Statue just in the corner. It will set the tone for your incredible experience. Proceed to your table and get ready for your first course.
Let’s Talk Food…
I know that some of the Disney restaurants have received a bad rap for the quality of meals, but I truly enjoyed the selection and taste of the buffet offerings here at Chef Mickey’s. We dined for an early breakfast before our day at Hollywood Studios and were fuelled successfully to get through more than 12 hours of magic. I had hearty helpings of all the usual breakfast fixings including eggs, bacon, sausage, toast, fruit, and my favourite, the Mickey Mouse waffles.
Drinks are included in your meal and at breakfast you will enjoy unlimited orange juice and a full pot of coffee or tea at your table to take care of your caffeine requirements.
If you enjoy the comforts of family mealtimes, you will enjoy the cuisine offered here. The usual family comfort foods are what they serve here. You know, the eggs and bacon, the toasts, the cheese, everything easily prepared at home. Gourmet dishes are absent at this eatery as the atmosphere doesn’t cater to such a presentation. I thoroughly enjoyed my meal here and agreed that it suited the character dining style.
The restaurant just screams Disney magic. The welcoming archway with Mickey upon it, the Monorail just outside in the foyer, the designer photos and the motifs all around the room, put smiles on guests’ faces and prepares you for the exciting character encounters you are about to experience.
The Amazing Character Interactions
This part of the experience is what sold me and had me gravitating to this restaurant. I just knew I had to have breakfast with the Mouse who started it all- Mickey, along with his closest friends Minnie, Donald, Pluto, and Goofy. If you book an early breakfast of 6:30-7:30 ish, be prepared to wait until at least 7 for the characters to appear. We patiently waited and found this to be a good opportunity to hit the buffet without missing our table’s encounter.
The first of the fab five to visit is of course, the host with the most – Mickey. Clad in chef’s gear, Mickey comes to the table ready and willing to sign autograph books and pose for several photographs. It truly feels magical.
Next you are charmed by Minnie. What a joy to meet her! She comes happily to your table in her classic polka dot frock and is ready to sign autographs and take many a photo.
Next, Donald stops by!
Don’t you love trying to imitate Donald’s voice? Well, my dad did this for me so much as a child so these memories flooded my mind when the incredible duck turned the corner. Sigh – childhood memory tear coming on 🙂
And then came the dogs – Pluto and Goofy! My dad’s favourite Disney character is Pluto. He just loves this ornage canine and cannot stop bringing him up when Disney comes around in conversation. Meeting Pluto would have put a smile on his face that no other character could come close. My photo and interaction with Pluto was for him. x
And what can you say about Goofy? He’s just such a joy to see and dance with. He was such fun.
I thoroughly enjoyed my breakfast at Chef Mickey’s. It was such a magical way to start our day. The food okay and acceptable for the atmosphere, however, I did love the signature Mickey shaped waffles. The ambiance, decor, and characters make up for this and then some.
