Why Everyone Must Stay at the Songbirds Rainforest Retreat in Queensland Australia
To me, rainforests spell peace. A feeling that we all need to experience now and then. A much deserved escape from the rat race. Yes my stressful overworked friends – a feeling you rarely experience. Travelling through the beautifully tropical Australian state of Queensland, hubby and I took a day trip up Mount Tamborine to gaze at the views, get up close and personal with kookaburras, and rejuvenate our relationship with nature once again. A lush fauna of gardens, forests, and tranquility, we decided to explore all the beautiful places within the mountain and came across the most beautiful sanctuary which replenishes your energy and revitalizes your soul – The Songbirds Rainforest Retreat.
A little Background on this beautiful place:
I am not going to lie. I fell in love with this place upon arrival. I knew walking up the hill that I truly wanted to stay here for a touch of rejuvenation, a revisit to my balanced space, and to rekindle some magic in my relationship with nature; however most importantly, having hubby there was such a blessing, as coming here with the most important person in your world makes the experience go from incredible to simply divine.
With a luxurious 50+-acres of rainforest, outdoor peace, and loads of amenities, you are bound to feel relaxed and balanced upon checkout. On the property there are six beautifully furnished villas. Depending on how many are in your party, some sleep two while others sleep 4-6.
Each villa comes complete with all the comforts of home- a spacious sitting area to recline with a book or to catch up in your travel diary, an entertainment system to cuddle up to a film or listen to relaxing meditations, a plush king-size bed in which you will get some much-needed, uninterrupted beauty sleep, and a spa bathroom with a gorgeous separate shower and spa bath perfectly built for ultimate solace. We were completely blown away by the beauty and luxury of the villas. We slipped into the provided bathrobes, made a pot of tea, and just relaxed enjoying the natural sounds of croaking tree frogs and crickets. Heaven.
Along with having lots of space to spread out inside, the villas all come with a beautiful balcony to enjoy the peaceful outdoors. Relax on the lounge or enjoy room service at the table. Your options are endless.
I love when retreats and accommodations provide extra amenities. It takes some stress away in the event you forget to pack your shampoo or toothpaste. Here at Songbirds guests are spoilt with some lovely complimentary products to enhance their stay. Bath and hygiene products are supplied (L’Occitane to be exact!), tealight candles to create a romantic mood while you soak in the tub, a fully stocked mini-bar, place settings, microwave, and fridge, insect repellent, laundry supplies, complimentary tea and cookies, and the essential Nespresso machine with all the pods you will need. When you arrive at your villa you literally plunge into a gully of peaceful possibilities.
Staying at Songbirds I truly felt like royalty – a special guest, VIP. The retreat offers such a wealth of services and amenities to suit all guests’ needs including award-winning dining, room service options, therapeutic massages with registered therapists, organic produce grown on-site with consideration to many dietary requirements, spa treatments, a gift shop featuring the exclusive Bonz label, and yoga classes should you wish to work on your downward dog. No stone goes un-turned to ensure guests leave revitalized and happy.
Keep in mind while you stay that the villas are meant for relaxation, relieving stress, and rekindling relationships with your partner, yourself, the universe, or otherwise. With this in mind, leave your electronic devices at home as there is no WIFI available, except in the lounge near the restaurant.
This may seem like the ultimate sacrifice to some, but to others this could be a release, could be liberating to become detached from technology for a short period of time, or could be an escape from the constant pace of everyday life. I enjoyed being unplugged for the duration of my stay (except for taking photographs) as it helped me truly appreciate my surroundings, swoon at the adorable wildlife, and enjoy my incredible company.
The Incredible Organic Onsite Cuisine
A good meal is determined by so many factors – taste, colour, texture, etc. All these are important, however, one factor that to me is of utmost importance is the quality of produce, meat, grains, and other foods.
Here at Songbirds, almost everything is grown and produced on site. Organic fruits and vegetables, butter and spreads, even honey from their own bees. You know that everything is as fresh as possible and cooked from scratch with little to no preservatives. To me, this is of highest quality and taste. It is nice to eat at an establishment who takes its culinary offerings seriously and brings only the finest of meals to its guests.
Songbirds already has a plentiful organic garden of a variety of fruits and vegetables; however, the award-winning chefs who double as the creative gardeners have some incredible expansion plans and ideas for additional produce offerings including additional avocado trees, mandarins, curry plants and more. It was a real treat having the privilege to wander through the lush gardens and seeing for ourselves the incredible products used in the restaurant meals.
The Award-Winning Restaurant
I was thrilled to bits about Songbirds‘ restaurant. I had read so much about their award-winning cuisine and talented chefs that to me, this lunch would be such a treat and huge highlight to our stay. Boy was I accurate on my prediction.
The menu was a selection of dishes that spelled pure decadence. They truly demonstrated the talents and artistic flair of the culinary staff. I cannot stress enough how incredible this restaurant is and that their awards are fully deserved. The meal we enjoyed here is one of the best I have experienced in the world.
First Course: Shucked Oysters
Now, I have not eaten oysters for roughly 10 years. My last encounter with these pearly shellfish did not end pretty. I am happy to report that I decided to take a chance and try the oysters at Songbirds as I thought perhaps the ones I had eaten previously were just a bad batch. And I am so happy I did. These oysters were fresh, flavoured, and perfectly shucked resting on a bed of sea salt. I enjoyed this first course immensely and am pleased I can enjoy oysters again.
Second Course: Kingfish Salad with Limecello
I have never had anything like it! Such a fresh tasting dish with all the flavours coming through for a perfect marriage on the palate. Joel puts such heart into every dish and its impeccable presentation. It looks so inviting on the plate. The limecello, made in house, is the perfect spritz on top bringing out the subtle flavour of the kingfish. Just divine.
Third Course: Rabbit with Tarragon & Kassler
The rabbit was delicious. I hadn’t had rabbit in a very long time and this dish was completely satisfying, The tarragon added that complementing flavour to make this course truly delightful. My husband had never had rabbit before and enjoyed it immensely!
Fourth Course: Suckling Pig with Black Pudding & Plum
What a delectable fusion of flavour! I love suckling pig and found this dish ticked off so many boxes on my foodie bucket list. Combining plum with pork was indeed a brilliant pairing and I never would have thought to add black pudding to this flavour marriage. Black pudding usually is associated with an English breakfast, but here it went perfectly with this tasty course. And the plum? Besides being my favourite fruit, you cannot go wrong with such a juicy and sweet addition to an already incredible dish.
5th Course: Smoked Duck with Blackberries & Pickled Watermelon
Now I have loved the first four courses of my lunch here are Songbirds. But nothing compares to the smoked duck. I have never had a more succulent, juicy, flavourful, delicious serving of duck EVER. Combine this mouthwatering meat with an infusion of blackberries and pickled watermelon, and you have a dish that would make Gordon Ramsay speechless. Joel the Sous-Chef truly surpassed my expectations with this un-duplicated dish that screams perfection. I hope for all future guests that this course remains on the menu. It truly was a culinary game-changer for me. Every piece of duck I consume from now on will be compared to this utterly scrumptious course here at Songbirds.
6th and Final Course: Artichoke Ice Cream, Figs & Pumpkin
You read that right – Artichoke ice cream. A flavour combination new to my palate, I was excited to try this freshly made dessert. And you know? I was pleasantly surprised. The figs were fresh and sweet, combined with the more potent pumpkin puree. A truly fresh and flavourful way to conclude such a satisfying repast.
In conclusion, I would not hesitate to recommend a stay at Songbirds Rainforest Retreat to anyone travelling through Queensland. Located just an hour away from Brisbane, this haven of luxurious accommodation and delicious cuisine is the perfect escape from your everyday routine. Book a weekend, grab your yoga mat, pack your bags, and head up the mountain. You will thank yourself over and over again for taking the time to unwind and treat yourself to an unbelievably memorable experience.
