These Instagram Worthy Foodie Spots in Toronto will Make you Hungry
Hangry. Yes, that is a word. It was added to the dictionary and for good reason. It describes those of us who cannot help but get foul when hungry, making us irritable and cranky. We get angry thanks to hunger pangs…hence the combo word hangry. I will admit to being this way when in grave need of food. And luckily I live in a city where almost every cuisine, every style of dining, and every flavour can be found to satisfy no matter what craving. To start our spotlight on the gastronomic quality and variety in the Six, here is our first installment of many Instagram Worthy Foodie Spots in Toronto – perfect for curing that powerful hangriness.
Now for the first installment of Instagram-Worthy Foodie Spots in Toronto…
1 – Pablo Cheese Tart – Pablo Cheese Tart Bakery, Dundas & Yonge, Toronto
Now, if you love cheesecake, you will love this lighter Japanese spin on the fancy schmancy dessert. The rich cheesy centre is baked with a phyllo crust and served warm with the Pablo logo iced on top. Choose the original creamy version of the treat, or indulge in a chocolate or matcha version. The bakery originally located in Japan, opened their first Toronto location just steps away from the iconic Dundas Square. This area of the busy street has become a unofficial little Japan area of Toronto with specialty restaurants popping up left right and centre giving patrons a taste of all the Japanese favourites they could want. Wondering how they got their name? Well, the owner shared that Pablo Picasso was an inspiration to the company who therefore named the establishment in honour of him. I highly recommend sharing one of these classic tarts and to pair one with a hot coffee. Heavenly for a snack, dessert, or to share on a date.
2 – Animal-Shaped Dumplings at Kwan Dim Sum
I love dim sum! I think it is my favourite of all Chinese cuisine. Well that, and Peking duck. So of course, in the Six I was on pursuit to find a very cool place to have some delicious dumplings that also passed for aesthetic appeal. With this in mind, I stopped in to Kwan Dim Sum just outside Rosedale, in Toronto. And I must say, after ordering waaaaaay too much, that this was one of the coolest and most satisfying dim sum lunches I have ever eaten! Not only were the savoury dumplings delicious, but their sweet dumplings in the shapes of animals won me over. Custard buns in the shape of porcupines, and sweet rolls shaped as rabbits were not only adorable, but also completely complemented my palate. Definitely add them to your Toronto foodie bucket list.
3- The Rainbow Bagel at What A Bagel – Bathurst & Carville, Richmond Hill
Bagels are such comfort food! So how about combining comfort with aesthetic appeal? This is where the rainbow bagels come in from the What A Bagel bakery in Richmond Hill at Bathurst and Carville. I knew that there were some rainbow-coloured foodie favourites out there, but never did I experience one for myself until now. Not all What a Bagel locations offer the rainbow version, so if you want to savour one with butter, cream cheese, or whatever you enjoy on yours, call ahead to ensure they are available. Oh, and if you go to the Richmond Hill location, order the blintzes too. They are UNREAL.
4 – Avocado Toast at the Early Bird Cafe – Queen Street, Toronto
I love avocado! It is so healthy for you and pairs perfectly in salads, with eggs, and atop some delicious thick toast. If you want an ultimate avocado toast experience, check out the Early Bird Cafe. They can offer it smushed or sliced, but I seriously recommend the sliced variation as its presentation will ignite your Instagram feed. Arranging the slices like a rose, the avocado looks beautiful and appetizing at the same time. You can also enjoy an array of sides with your toast including eggs cooked the way you like them, and a variety of meats. Pairs perfectly with a barista-crafted latte.
5- Incredible Lattes & Blueberry Pancakes- Mildred’s Temple Kitchen, Liberty Village
As a coffee nut, I seek unique cafes to tempt my taste buds and provide me with the caffeine fix I so require. I had known sort of about the blueberry pancakes here at Mildred’s but was so blown away by the taste, appearance and quality of the dish, that I just had to write a full review on my experience here. Pair your pancakes with the amazing lattes here at Mildred’s. The foam art is equally impressive!
6 – Yellowfin Tuna Salad at Joey’s Restaurants – Across Ontario
This healthy salad with a hint of citrus is a delight for the senses. Enjoy rare seared tuna mixed with mango, peanuts and a light ginger dressing. The presentation is also quite impressive! If you want to enjoy a meal at Joey’s, do make a reservation during busy hours, or stop in during happy hour!
7 – The Messy Fish Sandwich – Kelsey’s, Across Ontario
Another chain in Toronto, my husband just raves about the messy fish sandwich! He orders it all the time. It is filling, fishy and full of flavour. If you are okay with supporting chain restaurants, this is the sandwich and restaurant for you. Plus it is aesthetically pleasing considering its name includes the word “messy.”
8 – Viennese Coffee – Village Inn, Unionville
I don’t know about you, but I LOVE Bavarian cuisine. When travelling through Austria, I consumed many a bratwurst, strudel, and of course, Viennese coffee. The combination of espresso and whipped cream makes for the ultimate caffeine and sweet tooth fix. Try the Viennese coffee crafted at the Village Inn Bavarian Restaurant in the historic town of Unionville, just north of the Downtown core. Review of our experience at this restaurant coming soon to the blog!
9 – Pizza at Terroni – Locations in Toronto
Terroni is an authentic Italian restaurant specializing in pizza, pasta, and other Italian favourites. Choose from at least 20 different pizzas and pair it with your favourite Italian Merlot. Heaven!
10 – Handmade Mozzarella Ball – Scaddabush, Locations in Toronto
This unique appetizer is available with a variety of sides, including the pair and honey balsamic variation we chose! Enjoy it with the accompanied crostini and as a starter prior to your homemade pasta. Plus if you want to know how it is made, you can sit near the chef and he will walk you through the process step by step!
