This Restaurant is Home to the Best Pancakes in Toronto Ontario
So growing up we rarely had Aunt Jemima pancakes or waffles. My parents would make them from scratch or we would go for brunch at a restaurant and enjoy them with pure maple syrup. The breakfast of champions, pancakes with butter and pure maple syrup were such a treat. And of course it was the real Canadian stuff, not that watery stuff sold outside our borders…Top them with fruit, chocolate and other toppings, and you have more than a breakfast- you have a dessert, an indulgence, pure foodie satisfaction. You know that ultimate feeling after enjoying a meal that leaves you smiling until your next meal? This is exactly how I felt after enjoying the Best Pancakes in Toronto at Mildred’s Temple Kitchen, right in the heart of Liberty Village.
First a Little About Liberty Village
- Liberty Village is a converted Toronto borough that once was mostly factories. Nowadays it is a treasure trove of indie restaurants, modern condos, and boutique shops.
- Urban Professionals are moving into the village thanks to its up and coming art scene
- New and hip bars have opened in the community and have become perfect for the nightlife junkie in your group.
- Liberty Village’s name was chosen by the residents in order to bring a positive aura to the community. They also wanted to be separated and recognized as its own entity from the neighbouring Parkdale (another up and coming Toronto neighbourhood coming soon to the blog!)
Mildred’s Temple Kitchen, Home to the Best Pancakes in Toronto
This little foodie corner of Liberty Village Toronto, Mildred’s Temple Kitchen is pure heart when it comes to quality. Culinary excellence is the foundation of this restaurant which is proven with every dish leaving the open concept kitchen.
Open to the community in 1989, the original Mildred’s was located in Toronto’s west end near the warehouse district. It was one of the restaurant forefathers if you will of the brunch scene, bringing the now-popular meal option to the public, assisting its growth in trend and appeal. Mildred Pearce, the original moniker of the restaurant continues to stay near in dear within the souls of the restaurant’s atmosphere and gastronomy, adding beautiful flair and personality to this modern Liberty Village location that opened 18 years later. Nestled quaintly within a tiny converted factory building, Mildred’s corner of the city is truly memorable with food and fun worth finding.
The Amazing Food
So let’s cut to the chase. The food here is exceptional and certainly delivered on the build-up. Sometimes when things are spoken of so highly it leads to let down, but not here. Not Mildred’s. The title of pancake queen does fit Mildred perfectly. Planning to give the restaurant a try, we headed there on a Saturday morning for brunch. Upon arrival we were informed of a 90-minute wait…yep 90 minutes. This may seem lengthy to some diners, especially those that are borderline hangry, but trust me when I say that the food is worth the wait. You may be asking about reservations considering how long we waited for a table. Well, knowing their popularity, Mildred’s Temple Kitchen does take reservations, BUT, not on weekends. So if you are short on time, consider a meal here on a weekday when you can book your table well ahead, or arrive early for a shorter wait.
So I am a coffee lover with lattes being my preferred espresso beverage. If I am out for brunch, I usually choose a latte to savour with my entree, and if not available, coffee does the trick. Well, Mimi, the barista here at Mildred’s certainly took to the foam art and crafting the perfect latte for me in a serious way. I was served a true masterpiece. A satisfying latte with some of the most amazing foam art I have ever seen. Being a Disney nerd, right away I could see Cheshire Cat in the final design. How about you? Do you seem his likeness?
Now for the Piece de Resistance- The Best Pancakes in Toronto
So Mildred’s, even with an extensive menu selection catering to all tastes and many diets, is known in the city for having incredible pancakes. I had heard through the grapevine of this notion and wanted to see for myself just how good they were. I had my expectations high as growing up as mentioned, I was rarely served the hotcakes from a box or from a fast food chain. So, as the foodie and explorer of flavour that I am, I ordered the famous stack of blueberry pancakes. Fluffiness, taste, flavour, texture, they all are important in making the perfect pancake. And O. M. G. they were sooooooooo good. They definitely deserve the accolade. What do you think based on these mouthwatering make-you-want-to-jump-through-your-screen-to-eat-them pancakes?
For some variety and trying more than one item on this famed menu, my husband opted for Veda’s Choice- Mildred’s spin on eggs benedict: 2 poached eggs served on a croissant with Bearnaise sauce, mixed greens, and rosemary potatoes. Now, I love fried potatoes for breakfast. THESE WERE THE BEST. Rosemary by far is my favourite herb and the fusion of this flavour into the potatoes was exceptional. You seriously need to try them and, no sauce necessary, not even trusty Ketchup or Brown Sauce, for ultimate gastronomic satisfaction.
Overall this restaurant in the heart of Toronto Ontario is top-notch and definitely one to add to your travel plans.
