The Ultimate Romance Guide To Covent Garden London
Two of my favourite four-letter words beginning with “s” are “Shop” and “Sale.” (those of you out there who thought something else, get your mind out of the gutter….) And with this strong admiration to find the most unique of trinkets and delicious of scones imaginable, I high-tail it to no other district in the Big Smoke than Covent Garden- a place for rekindling romance in more ways than one.
So, let’s help you get your Sizzle on…
A little area of West London initially known for markets and originating back in 1845, Covent Garden has emerged into one of the most popular shopping districts in the city. With unique stores, award-winning restaurants, and a variety of entertainment options, couples have the difficult task of deciding on their itinerary. So here we are to help with our 12 romantic suggestions:
1- Enjoy a Ballet Performance
The ballet is a favourite for couples. Well, perhaps more so for us women, but taking in a show should definitely bring on the romantic vibe. Do check out the English National Ballet to see what is currently playing and book your tickets for the show that best interests you. You may be in luck and be in the area during Swan Lake or Cinderella’s run 😉
2- Stop in to the 007 James Bond Exhibit
Flashy cars, especially Aston Martins get men in the mood for love. So be sure to take your casa nova to the London Museum here in Covent Garden to marvel at the exact vehicles used in the James Bond movies! It is a fun experience and you can take selfies right then and there with their free WIFI throughout the museum. Read our review of this experience here.
3- Get a Bespoke bottle of Perfume!
Head over to Penhaligan’s and grab a bottle of bespoke perfume with the fusion of scents that suit your fancy! As perfume has a natural tendency to trigger our sensuality, it just may well be the perfect gift for a sizzling boost to your holiday. Go on then, grab a flask and starting fusing your favourite scents together!
4- Breakfast at The Ivy Market Grill
Breakfast is my favourite meal of the day. While in London, I stumbled upon this delightful Garden restaurant and just had to pop in for a coffee and bite to eat. Have a seat on the patio amidst the ivy vines, potted plants, and all the lush greenery you could want. Not only will you be eating at a beautiful restaurant with an outdoor ambiance fit for the fancy, but also enjoy a meal that will begin your day on a high note. I particularly recommend the continental breakfast – the pastries are baked daily and the homemade preserves are just incredible.
5- Buy some flowers at the Market
Women just love flowers. It doesn’t matter what kind, they love flowers. Surprise your sweetie with a beautiful bouquet from one of the local market stalls. They range in price, but the value of a smile truly is priceless!
6- Stay for some evening entertainment!
Stick around the complex for some delightful evening entertainment! Everything from 5-piece bands, to operatic arias, to salsa dancing- here at Covent Garden the performers will get you in the mood for a delightful candlelit dinner. Some performers, mainly the buskers do their acts for gratuities. Should you enjoy their performance help their livelihoods and drop them a coin or two.
7- Check out the Boutique Shops
Everything from Kate Spade, to Jigsaw, to my favourite – Lulu Guinness, it is all here at Covent Garden! Have a browse, try on the shoes, sport the dress, or just window shop! Either way, a nice outing observing the latest trends together brings joy as the latest styles displayed in front of you. For a cheaper alternative, check out such shops as Paperchase, Accessorize, and my fave, the Moumin shop 🙂
8- Indulge at Maxwell’s with a Freakshake!
You know those cartoons where lovers share a milkshake and each have a straw making a heart shape? Well picture that image, but with a monsterous masterpiece from Maxwell’s! This American-inspired restaurant will have you arrive starving and leaving fully satisfied. Nothing sparks romance like dessert. I mean, the smell of chocolate has my hubby and I soaring to cloud nine and as happy as clams. These freakshakes will do the same for you! I personally would go for the banana split as at least I can get a serving of fruit through my indulgence….
9- Eat Cupcakes at the Sweetheart Bakery!
As my bio denotes, I have yet to find a cupcake I do not like. I guess you could say that they pretty much put a smile on my face and make the clouds disappear on a rainy day. Therefore, I am betting you were waiting for my cupcake bakery recommendation in this list! And here it is – the Sweetheart Bakery! This adorable eatery is the epitome of cuteness, frosting, and ultimate cupcake delight.
Each cupcake is made professionally with sugared notions – flowers, bows, etc. Each showcasing the artistic talented of the bakery’s talented bakers. Nothing says happiness to me than a bespoke cupcake with fondant flowers and unique flavours. What I also love about this bakery is the packaging. How exciting to take your cupcake(s) with you adorned in string-tied packaging. This allows you to enjoy your cupcake later… you know, at that perfect time just before a boring meeting when you need a sugar rush to stay alert. 😉
10 – Have a Poutine, and if Canadian, a Piece of Home at the Maple Leaf Bar
Living abroad for nearly two years it was such a surprise and bittersweet to see a little piece of home in one of my favourite areas of London – The Maple Leaf Bar. You will love little taste of the Great White North with a fully stocked menu featuring such favourites as bacon, poutine and maple syrup, classic Canadian beer on draught, and many a symbolic maple leaf, grizzly bear, and hockey jersey. Add the romantic touch by grabbing a corner table, a poutine big enough for two, and a glass of bubbly. Canadian bliss.
11 – Dine at the Oldest Restaurant in London!
Wine and Dine your sweetheart at Rules, the oldest restaurant in London. Since 1798, Rules has been serving patrons traditional British cuisine including roast beef and Yorkshire pudding, filet mignon, or a Beef Wellington upon request. Be sure to try the Kate Middleton cocktail – it will make you fee like a princess. For more information, do read our review on our experience here.
12 – Enjoy Each Other and Take in Every Moment in the Big Smoke
The most important thing to do in Covent Garden, and everywhere else you holiday with your honey is to cherish each other and enjoy the moments only you will appreciate. A walk through the pathways laughing at inside jokes, drinking a latte and wearing a frothy ‘stache, sporting a hilarious shirt and getting pulled into a conga line etc…these moments are priceless.
