Our Romance Guide to Santorini – Things to Do
Explore the Island by Quad Bike
While we were there, my husband and I wanted to make the most of our experience. We had heard that the best way to get around the island was via quad bike so we rented one. This was one of the best decisions we made!
Renting a quad bike to explore and get around gives you independence and freedom to enjoy your time at your own pace. We explored all corners of the island, enjoyed pina coladas overlooking the famous sunset, walked along the beautiful black and red sand beaches, and strolled through the cobbled streets to browse in the island shops.
Have Professional Photos Taken
So there is no law that states you must be engaged, pregnant or any other life event to have professional photos taken with a dreamy backdrop. This was the case for us, although we did end up using the pics for our engagement.
Think of all the beautiful professional photographs of you within the unique and beautiful backdrop of blue-domed buildings and sunsets. It really is a dream came true. While we were there, we found a wonderful photographer who made this happen and took some of the most amazing photographs we could have asked for. He took us to the black beach for the first half of our shoot, then to the beautiful blue-domed church and other blue domed buildings for the second half, concluding the experience in Oia, overlooking the beautiful and famous sunset.
When our photographs were processed, we couldn’t have been happier. Those photographs were a perfect depiction of how we felt about each other and our memories of Santorini. The photographer was brilliant, and our memories were captured.
Try the Fish Spa
There are mixed opinions on this experience, but we decided to give it a try. As strange as it sounds, the fish spa definitely is unique. You place your feet into an aquarium and these fish nibble your skin and freshen your feet. If you do go for this treatment, prepare to test your tickling tolerance.
Check out Akrotiri, Archaeological Site
Rome isn’t the only spot in Europe with ancient ruins. While relaxing and enjoying the gorgeous scenery, why not go for a historic tour and see some of the incredible archaeological sites on the island.
Akrotiri is an ancient settlement on the island dating back to roughly 1627 BC. This site is said to have inspired Plato in his literary works about the ancient city of Atlantis. (A reason in itself to check this out!) You can do a guided tour of the indoor ruins and learn about the various geological formations that have evolved through time.
Check out the Sunset in Oia
So the sunset is the biggest drawing card to the island. It is such a phenomenal daily occurrence that pretty much every visitor on the island flocks to Oia to get the best photo from the best vantage point to post on their Instagram feed. Get to the area early as people sit upon ledges, wait for it at restaurants hoping for a balcony table, or just stand in areas where it is standing room only. Your best option is to make a reservation at one of the restaurants that boast exceptional views and enjoy a meal as the sun sets. It is truly incredible.
Check out the Black and Red Beaches
I loved the beaches in Santorini as they were not the usual beige-sand beaches you are accustomed to in such spots as the Caribbean and Australia. Here there are two beaches in particular amongst the rest, that I highly recommend you visit – Monolithos Beach, one of the black beaches, and the red beach.
First the Red Beach:
The Red Beach is a beautiful area created by volcanic sediment. It is located in an inlet by a sliding mountain and formed thanks to erosion through the ages. It got its red sand through this evolution and is such a contrast with the clear waters that reach shore in ebbs and flows.
The Red Beach is difficult to get to for bathers and explorers alike, but once you get there, its beauty will make it worth the effort.
Kamari region, Monolithos Black Beach
Monolithos beach is right in the heart of Kamari. Black sand thanks to volcanic sediment, the beach attracts thousands of bathers, swimmers, and even naturists yearly. The shore is quite shallow with a number of shoals making it easy to walk out into the sea for metres at a time.
Enjoy a variety of cafes, chalets, and shady umbrellas as you work on your suntan, engage in some water sports, or just relax and enjoy a cocktail by the sea. Plus, it is the perfect backdrop for professional photos!
Where to Eat
Santorini also has incredible places for meals. While here, we discovered several enjoyable eateries including a beautiful resort café, rooftop Michelin-star restaurants, and some of the best coffee experienced in Europe.
There are several lovely little cafes amidst the seaside luxury resorts. They are open to non-guests for a meal and incredible vantage point of the famous sunset.
We found these cafes to be so enjoyable. They offered not only incredible picturesque views of the Aegean sea, sailboats, and quintessential sunset, but also mixed the most amazing pina coladas. These signature libations go perfectly with fresh Greek salad, baked pitas, and delightful in-house souvlaki.
The Garden Terrace
The Garden Terrace is located not too far away from the main shopping area. With a ceiling of greenery, and terracotta pots of palms and foliage, the tone is set for the perfect spot for breakfast, brunch, or a late night latte coupled with a chocolate soufflé. We enjoyed morning brunch and that late night snack. Truly a versatile and beautiful spot to enjoy a meal on Santorini.
Of course when visiting Santorini, everyone flocks to Oia to experience the beauty of the sunset over the blue-domed buildings. So of course, we just had to include in our Romantic Guide to Santorini the best one to enjoy a meal- Michelin star upscale 1800. Deemed the best restaurant in all of Greece, this beautiful gastronomic masterpiece dawns a rooftop patio overlooking the sunset, a beautiful atmosphere, and a signature menu curated by the talented executive chef. We were at a loss for words upon arrival at this gorgeous establishment. We enjoyed a 4-course tasting meal with sparkling wine, cosmopolitan cocktails, succulent entrées, and satisfying desserts.
Depending on your budget, there are so many options for accommodations on Santorini. Perhaps you have some wiggle room. I would highly recommend one of the cliff side resorts that offer guests private pools and Jacuzzis, all you can eat buffets, and amenities fit for royalty. If these luxury resorts are beyond your wallet’s ability, you can check out more recommendations here.
I sign off our Romantic Guide to Santorini by telling all of you out there to savour every moment in each day and cherish the beauty of life. When the sunsets over the houses in Oia, it is a moment unlike any other, and definitely will leave warmth in your heart. It was truly a moment where my favorite quote came into play: ” Life is not measured by how many breaths you take; but by the moments that take your breath away.”
