Walk in Carrie Bradshaw’s Stilettos on the Best Sex and the City Tour in NYC
I don’t know about you, but I love Sex and the City! The series brought women together through comical banter, hilarious plots, and even with the dramatics as they caused an influx of cosmos to be ordered in select restaurants. I owe quite a bit to the show for giving me that outlet when the going got tough and I needed something to binge-watch. I have done oodles of quizzes and they all same the same thing – I am most like Charlotte. I do think Kristin Davis and I are kindred spirits in some respects, (though I doubt I could’ve been as tactful with Bunny!) and could quite possibly put Miranda, Samantha and Carrie in their places if they pissed me off. New York City is the setting for this fabulous series of girl power. And while vacationing in the Big Apple, I decided to relive my fond memories of watching the six seasons and two movies by seeing exactly where those poignant plot points were filmed. Here is my review and lowdown on the Best Sex and the City Tour in NYC.
About The Sex and the City Tour in NYC
On Location Tours is such a great company offering so many different film and movie tours. We knew we would have a blast since we had done the Holiday Lights and Movie Locations tour and were uber excited at seeing all the impressive store windows and exactly where the snowball fight occurred in Elf. The Sex and the City tour in NYC was just like this format with frequent stops, hilarious commentary, and a little cheekiness. Here are the logistics:
- The Tour is approximately 3 hours
- The guide will point out approximately 40 different locations that had some sort of significance in the show.
- There are a few stops explore Sex and the City tour hotspots, take photographs, and indulge in some unique shopping and food.
- The coach is very comfortable with an on board washroom.
- To keep up with the sites, the guide will play the clip from the show on the on board televisions! I loved this as it gave you a clear reminder of where the scene took place. Some of the more remote scenes are harder to remember such details so having this was a great bonus.
- The guide was hilarious with some brilliant and appropriate off-colour quips. Keep this in mind when booking as some stops and jokes may not be suitable for minors.
Sites on the Sex and the City Tour New York
Now, as mentioned, the Sex and the City tour map does cover over 40 locations shown on the tour. In order to keep some surprises on the tour, here are some highlights of sites pointed out on the tour. These are shown from the road so you need to snap your photos quickly from your seat. You do get to stop at a few places where significant plot points took place, but these ones here are quick so you need to be alert and be snap happy to get them!
This little pizza joint in the West Village was the site where Carrie and Miranda talk over pizza in the episode “Great Sexpectations.”
The scene sort of goes like this – Carrie and Miranda are not satisfied after a meal at “Raw,” a vegan restaurant so they head here for a great piece of pizza to discuss new relationships and other banter.
The New York Library
Sex and the City addicts will definitely know the significance of this iconic landmark right in the heart of the city. It is where the original wedding of Carrie and Big was to take place and where she was left at the alter when Big suffered cold feet. This library is an incredible spot to explore on its own and if you have time after the Sex and the City tour in NYC, do try and make time to see some of the most incredible rooms housing New York’s biggest literary collection.
Tiffany & Co.
One of the most iconic shops in New York City right on 5th avenue, the tour takes you past this store where Trey bought Charlotte the engagement ring of her choosing after the nonchalant “all righty” response to her suggesting they get married in a restaurant conversation. This shop on 5th Avenue makes the most money of all of them and although this store is the most filmed in the world, only one has been filmed inside- Breakfast at Tiffany’s. The tour does not stop here, but if you can visit the store afterward, it is worth it. Also, try and get a table at the new Blue Box Cafe. It is reservation only, but you will actually have breakfast at Tiffany’s.
Tour Stops on the Best Sex and the City Tour in NYC
There are some wonderful stops on this tour that will bring back such fun Sex and the City memories! These Sex and the City Tour hotspots give you opportunities for photographs, unique food, purchases, and piece of television nostalgia.
The first stop on the tour is the cheeky Pleasure Chest adult shop. You may recall an episode or two filmed here looking at treasures as the toy “Rabbit.” You are given approximately 10-12 minutes here to stretch your legs, make a personal purchase if you so wish with the tour discount, or to grab a coffee. Due to the private and personal nature of the products at the Pleasure Chest, no photographs are allowed inside the shop. You can however take photos of the exterior of the shop.
On the stop, we decided to grab a coffee at the independent cafe “Toby’s.” The coffee is top-notch and they have a great selection of baked goods. It is a very quaint spot and has a really great buzz.
This is a brief stop to check out the venue of Carrie and Big’s rehearsal dinner as featured in the first film! Right at the front door you can relive the scene when Steve pulls up and Samantha fetches feisty and heartbroken Miranda before she tells Big he is crazy to get married. Oooh dramatic stuff! The restaurant is beautiful and you can grab some great photos of the great dining room from above during this 10-minute nostalgic pit stop.
This was one of the most exciting stops on the Sex and the City Tour New York has to offer! You can actually stand on the bottom step of where Carrie’s apartment is located in NYC. The owner of the flat is pretty tolerant with all the tourism and papparazzi Sex and the City fanatics surrounding his place, BUT can get quite cranky if anyone trespasses beyond the boundary. There is a chain across the staircase to give him a little privacy; even with this much-deserved barrier you still can stand on the bottom step and get a fabulous photo. PLEASE, when you go, don’t be a loser and jump the chain! We actually witnessed this behaviour on the tour and it really made me mad as it sets a poor example for travellers who respect personal property. Good thing the owner didn’t see the dummies on the top step getting a selfie! Now, enough of the rant! When you go on the Sex and the City tour in NYC, make sure you grab your photos in front of the apartment and tick this off your Sex and the City Bucket List! The guide will take great photos for you and does ensure all those on the tour respects the chain.
Annik Goutal Perfumery & Magnolia Bakery
After taking the photos outside Carrie’s apartment, head on over to Annik Goutal perfumery! This exact boutique provides Sarah Jessica Parker and Leonardo Dicaprio with their fragrances of choice! We enjoyed browsing in here and picked up a fragrance each for our upcoming 3rd anniversary. Seeing how “Glass” is the modern gift for 3rd year wedding anniversaries, how fitting as both the perfume and cologne come packaged in beautiful glass bottles. And, being on the tour, you get a 15% discount!
Magnolia Bakery is amazing. They are particularly famous for their banana pudding and their moist and satisfying cupcakes. Carrie was a frequent visitor of this bakery to savour the cupcakes and now you can enjoy them too. I highly recommend the red velvet and vanilla flavours, but they have many other tantalizing options. I chose the vanilla bean as nothing beats vanilla cupcakes in my book. As a cupcake nerd, this stop definitely affirmed this tour as the Best Sex and the City Tour in NYC.
So I bet your were wondering when the cosmopolitans would come into play on the tour! Well, they happen at the second last stop on the tour at Onieal’s – the actual location of SCOUT- the bar that Aidan and Steve bought and ran together in the show. Here, enjoy $10 (special tour price) cosmopolitans and a relax in the beautiful and quaint bar lounge. We loved the cosmopolitans here. They were mixed beautifully and the price couldn’t be beat!
After enjoying the delightful cosmopolitans at Onieals, the coach takes you to the final drop off stop – HBO store. Here you can purchase some really cool Sex and the City memorabilia along with other shows including Game of Thrones and more.
This is definitely a must when in New York if you are a fan of the show. Seeing more than 40 locations on the Sex and the City tour map with witty commentary, knowledge, photo opps, and great stops along the way to satisfy all tastes, I can affirm that this is the best Sex and the City Tour in NYC.
