You Will Love Blue Mountain Ontario Year Round For These Reasons
Ever wanted to go somewhere that can handle all four seasons? I am like that. In Ontario I find that many of the incredible spots I want to explore are closed in the winter and have such a short season. This makes it so hard to balance time and money as for 6 months of the year your choices are limited. In Ontario we meet this dilemma with so many iconic regions – Niagara Falls, Tobermory, and National Parks whose focus is on camping. There are others where it gets so cold I wouldn’t venture there due to my comfort levels in the freezing cold (sorry James Bay, you will have to wait until next summer!). But not all landmarks and regions of the province fall under this category. Many are fun and enjoyable in all four seasons, bringing lifelong memories and incredible experiences. Blue Mountain Ontario Resort and Village is an example. This fully-functional resort prolific in activities, amenities, and holiday musts, is the ideal destination in Ontario suiting all months of the year.
A Little Bit about Blue Mountain Ontario
- Blue Mountain Ontario Resort opened its doors in 1941
- Blue Mountain celebrated their 75th ski and summer season with auctions, limited edition artwork, and other fun activities
- Blue Mountain Village is located in Collingwood Ontario in the Blue Mountains. This area is in Southwestern Ontario and in one of the most beautiful scenic areas of the province. Beaver River flows nearby into Nottowasaga Bay providing a beautiful setting for that getaway to unwind.
- Ski season is the most profitable in the region, however, summers here are also hopping with outdoor hikes, obstacle courses, lakeside activities and patio dining.
- Blue Mountain Ontario is located within the Apple Pie Trail (coverage coming soon!) with several establishments featuring recipes and drinks to honour the trail spotlighting apples and their gastronomic versatility
- 5-minute drive away from the village sits the Scandinave Spa (coverage coming soon!) This relaxation haven is located within 25 acres of natural Ontario birch trees – beautiful arbors with the unique white bark.
Things to Do at Blue Mountain Ontario
With offerings available all year round for all seasons, you can only imagine how much there is to do in Blue Mountain. Here are our recommendations to get the most of your time at Blue and how to enjoy it no matter what season you visit.
So let’s start with one of my favourite seasons – summer.
Enjoy a Paddle Boat Ride on the pond
I just love these things. Hop aboard a fun boat and paddle around the pond just outside the Westin Hotel. Four people can fit into one boat and the excercise will do you a bit of good to get into the beach body you vie for. Grab tickets at the office just at the entrance of Blue at the edge of the pond.
Swoosh down the mountain on the Ridge Runner
Probably not too many of you will remember, but there used to be this nostalgic cement track for luge-style vehicles to head down the mountain at warp speed. You had brakes to control your speed and a view of the village that would take your breath away. Well, after many years of scrapes and collisions, sadly this piece of Blue Mountain history needed to be replaced. They took on the project in a big way and opened up the Ridge Runner, a safer, upscale, revolutionary ride that added stronger seat belts, safer tracks, and brakes that slowed riders down on top of the ones controlled by the driver. When heading back to Blue I wasn’t sure how I felt about the new and improved experience as my heart was left in the 1980’s upon the cement. Well, I must say after riding the new track I loved it! Do make sure you head here first thing on your trip or you will be waiting in hour-long queues! We were there nearly 2 hours!
Play a Round of Miniature Golf
If you want to find something both leisurely and diverting, why not play a round of mini golf with your family? The 18-hole course has mixed level greens with obstacles and different par goals to make it a fun and challenging experience. Purchase a pass at the Activity Central office and get tickets for here, the Ridge Runner and any other fun activity to enjoy during your trip.
Try the Timber Challenge
Ready for something challenging? Now don’t worry, I don’t mean anything as complicated or gruelling as Tough Mudder. I am talking about a fun rope course that is above ground. The Timber Challenge is a fun physical activity full of obstacles and challenges for all keen participants. You are given up to 3 hours to get through the course and believe me, it can take up to that long! It is very fun though so be sure to grab your passes when you arrive in the village.
Have a Pizza at the Fire Hall
I love a good pizza. When you are outside of Italy finding one that is almost as authentic just seems impossible. Well look no further than the Fire Hall. They have a huge selection with various toppings and a fun family-oriented setting. We enjoyed the BBQ chicken pizza and the Mexican inspired pizza. Both were divine!
Go Shopping in the Unique Shops
Blue Mountain Village is not only a hub for the sports and recreational type of travellers, but also the leisurely type who enjoy browsing unique boutiques and shops, sampling different cuisines, and enjoying the blissful sound of birds and the breeze through the coniferous branches. Here have a peek in some of the fun stores that have large collections of kitsch, antiques, souvenirs, gags, toys, clothing, and upscale linens. When we were there in August, they even had a great collection of decorative jack o’lanterns! I was a little taken aback by the fall collections already on display as the summer breeze was felt in my bones.
In winter have a look at the large collection of ski gear available in the Blue Mountain village. Don’t fret if you misplace your toque, your goggles, or even your ski jacket. With Columbia, and many other specialized ski shops on hand, you can get all rugged up for any -0 temps!
Enjoy a Chocolate treat at Rocky Mountain Chocolate Factory
Okay chocoholics this one is for you. The Rocky Mountain Chocolate Factory offers deliciously decadent chocolate truffles, bark, and epic covered apples. Enjoy a Granny Smith apple dipped in chocolate and then covered in a variety of toppings. Hubby went for the coconut covered apple over the apple pie, Reese’s Pieces, and other incredible flavours. Which one would you choose for your holiday indulgence?
Unwind at IWA Spa
While here, slow it down with a wonderful revolutionary yoga practice at the amazing IWA Spa! They are one of the only yoga studios in the entire world to offer yin, restorative and other classes upon ancient volcanic rock infused with infrared heat. It truly is incredible. Not in the mood for yoga? IWA also offers top-notch manicures, pedicures, facials, and massages.
Head to Activity Central for the Scoop on Happenings and Day Trips
Activity central is the first stop after checking into your resort. Head here before the lines get insane to inquire on events, activities and even day trips outside of Blue. Grab Timber Challenge, activity passes for the Ridge Runner, miniature golf, ziplining, bag drops, and outside the village trips for wine tours, helicopter flights, and more.
Test your Stamina at Straight Up
All those hikers out there will love Straight up. It is literally a very steep ascent up the mountain by foot. Enjoy panoramic views of the village once you arrive at the top. Do not attempt this hike if you are not physically able as it really is a steep one! An alternative is to mountain bike! Take advantage of the bike lift and head up to cycle through the various trails.
Take the Scenic Gondola
A nice leisurely ride up to the top enjoy wonderful views of the village and take some awesome photos of the hikers below doing it the hard way haha!
Enjoy a Maple Bacon Caesar at Kaytoo Restaurant and Bar
If you want a Canadiana comfort fix, look no further than Kaytoo. Enjoy an array of burgers, appetizers, fish, sandwiches, and more. Want a drink recommendation? Try the Maple Bacon Caesar – a drink of Motts Clamato, maple vodka, and rimmed with maple syrup and bacon bits. The kicker? A strip of bacon instead of a celery stalk for garnish! Save room for dessert? Don’t look any further than S’mores in a jar for that campfire aroma mixed with the sweetness of marshmallow and chocolate. Divine!
Unwind at Scandinave Spa
Open all year round, this haven of tranquility and stress relief is the perfect spot to rest after a long day of sightseeing, skiing, hiking, biking etc. The most popular season to visit Blue Mountain Ontario is in fact winter, however, the spa does bring such a soothing atmosphere no matter when you visit. Enjoy multiple pools of different temperatures, Finnish and Infrared saunas, hammocks, loungers, campfire smells, and the peace of being screen-free. Coverage coming soon! Stay tuned….
